BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Although Gainesville blew past Brunswick, 42-0, in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs, its quarterfinal fate lies in the hands of the Georgia High School Association.
Late in the third quarter, the game was suspended after a sideline-clearing altercation between the two teams. Gainesville will now wait to hear from the GHSA on possible player suspensions.
Gainesville athletics director Adam Lindsey confirmed they’ll await a ruling on the situation from the GHSA late Friday night.
“The game was suspended with a few minutes to go in the third quarter after an on-field altercation,” Lindsey said. “We don’t know the ramifications of what happened, but we will keep you updated.”
Gainesville was running away with the contest when the altercation happened with 1:57 to go in the third quarter.
But after a scoreless first quarter, the run away started in the second quarter. Big Red found its groove, taking a 21-0 lead off two rushing touchdowns from Nigel Newkirk and a passing touchdown from Kharim Hughley to Cameron James.
The Red Elephants opened the second half with fireworks when Legend Wilmont scampered 85 yards on the opening kickoff for a 28-0 lead.
Elijah Watson then added his own fireworks when he intercepted a pass and took it 56 yards for a TD and a 34-0 advantage.
PJ Lewis scored the final Gainesville TD in the third quarter on a 16-yard run.
Newkirk finished the night with 91 yards on 15 carries and two scores. Hughley was 8-of-14 passing for 83 yards and a TD.
Big Red finished the night with 299 yards of offense, 216 of which came on the ground.
Gainesville’s defense held Brunswick to 114 total yards of offense.
