DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – The Dawson County flag football team improved to 3-1 in region play, splitting Thursday’s action against Rome and Heritage-Catoosa at Tiger Stadium.

The first-year program fell to Rome, 7-0 in Game 1, but defeated Heritage-Catoosa, 28-6.

With the split, the Tigers find themselves in the middle of the playoff race and still in the hunt for a region title.

However, the region title quest took its first blemish on Thursday as they fell to Rome.  The Wolves scored the game’s only points with 8:20 remaining in the second quarter.

Dawson’s offense struggled to get out of the gates in Game 1, tossing five interceptions.

But the defense put the Tigers in a position to take the first lead in the first quarter after freshman Sadie Parker grabbed her third interception of the season at the Rome 12-yard line. But Rome answered by picking off a pass in the endzone.

Junior Ramsey Smith also had an interception for Dawson.

The Tigers found an offensive groove in the second game against Heritage-Catoosa.

Heritage took the game’s opening drive for a 6-0 lead before the Tigers took over the contest.

Dawson County responded with a 64-yard drive, and sophomore quarterback Lilly Brown hit senior Andee Fowler for a 37-yard TD, 7-6 Dawson. Brown extended the Tiger lead to 14-7 with a 16-yard rushing TD with 50 seconds remaining in the first half.

Dawson County added a pair of fourth-quarter scores to seal the game. The first was a Brown to Hope Selzer 15-yard TD with 4:15 remaining. Then, senior Cayden Townley had a 25-yard pick-six with 2:15 remaining.

Dawson County hosts Ringgold next Thursday as region play continues.
