The Dawson County flag football team has advanced to the Division 2 State Playoffs in its first season.

The Tigers (6-3, 5-2) will face the Area 4 runner-up in the first round of the playoffs.

Dawson County entered the night looking to earn a share of the Area 7 title, but fell 20-7 to host Fannin County. Fannin County clinched the Area 7 title with the victory and later earned the area sweep with a 7-0 record.

After the Rebels took the game one opening drive for a score, the Tigers rallied for the 7-7 tie on the ensuing drive. Dawson County’s Ramsey Smith swept in for the 3-yard score with 9:10 remaining in the first half.

The Rebels reclaimed the lead on the ensuing drive and added their final score on their first drive of the second half. The Fannin defense held Dawson out of the endzone on two other red zone drives.

Dawson secured the No. 3 seed by following up with a 25-6 win over Gilmer.

Smith set up the Tigers for an opening drive lead after she returned a Gilmer punt to the Bobcat 38. Dawson closed the drive when Lilly Brown connected with Hope Selzer for a 5-yard score and a 6-0 lead.

Gilmer County answered the Dawson County drive, scoring on a 15-yard score, 6-6. The Tigers bounced right back, marching the ensuing drive down for a 9-yard Brown rushing TD and a 12-6 lead.

After holding Gilmer’s responding drive on downs, the Tigers marched 65 yards in the first half’s final 46 seconds to score on a 15-yard Brown-to-Kadence Rhodes-to Selzer hook and ladder score at the horn. Brown hit Rhodes for the PAT to extend the Dawson lead to 19-6.

Dawson’s opening drive of the third quarter was stymied at the Gilmer one, but the Tigers would turn the tables two downs later as senior defensive back Addison Smith had a 10-yard Pick 6 to finish off the game scoring. Dawson  County would successfully run the clock out after halting Gilmer’s final drive on downs at the Tiger 29.
