Finn Wolfhard teased that his character on Stranger Things, the cerebral Mike Wheeler, finally wields a “weapon” in the fifth and final season.
Wolfhard spoke during a cast panel at The Paley Museum in New York City on Thursday, Dec. 18. The panel featured fellow cast members Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin and Natalia Dyer, as well as show creators Matt and Ross Duffer (“the Duffer Brothers”).
During one point in the conversation, Wolfhard, 22, described his character’s “special” relationship with his big sister, Nancy Wheeler, played by Dyer, 30.

“There’s something really special about Mike and Nancy’s relationship. Even going back to the audition of the show, the very first thing that I ever auditioned, like the first scene that I ever auditioned for was Mike talking to Nancy and asking her to keep this secret — basically that I have Eleven,” he began.
“And so that’s been in the DNA of the character that, no matter what, Nancy always kind of knows what’s going on. And they’re both kind of the same stand in for each other [in their respective friend groups]. I feel like Nancy is the Mike of her friend group.”
“I think there’s a leader thing,” Dyer interjected.

“She’s way better with a gun,” Wolfhard jokingly shot back, before proudly adding, “Hey everybody, watch out! … I have a weapon in this season. That’s all I’ll say.”

The comment hints at a potential departure for Wolfhard’s character in the final season, as Mike is typically viewed as the strategist and emotional leader of the group as opposed to a fighter.

Wolfhard went on to share that he and Dyer specifically asked the Duffer Brothers to write scenes between Mike and Nancy in the show’s final episodes, noting that they didn’t share many scenes in the first few seasons of the show.

“We wanted scenes together, and like we asked the Duffers — I think you guys were already planning on putting us together, but it was something that I think we really were wanting and it was the best. It was so fun,” he added.
The first four episodes of the final season of Stranger Things are currently steaming on Netflix. Three new episodes are set to drop on Dec. 25, with the series finale dropping on Dec. 31.
