CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Multiple law enforcement agencies responded Tuesday evening after a driver fled from a traffic stop in Clarkesville. The suspect, identified as Steven Crocker of Baldwin, led officers on a short foot chase through a wooded area near the Ingles grocery store.

According to Clarkesville Police Chief Danny Clouatre, Officer Bill Simmons attempted to stop a sedan for a headlight violation after spotting the vehicle traveling without lights at night. The driver, later identified as Crocker, pulled into the Ingles gas station off Toccoa Highway, then jumped out of the car and ran.

Officers from the Clarkesville Police Department and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office joined in the pursuit. Police captured Crocker a short time later in the wooded area below Ingles after running through the woods and down an embankment.

Chief Clouatre expressed appreciation for the quick assistance from nearby officers.

“I really appreciate them listening out and being so close and ready to assist an officer when they need it,” he said.

Records from the Georgia Department of Corrections show that Crocker, 39, has a lengthy criminal history in Habersham County, including prior convictions for methamphetamine possession and possession with intent to distribute. He has served multiple prison sentences, most recently at Dooly State Prison, where he was released in March 2025.
