Alison Friend is giving dog lovers everywhere something to wag their tails about.

The British artist — whose witty, human-like portraits of pups have earned her more than a million followers across social media — is releasing her debut book, Dog Only Knows. And PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at some of the adorable (and hysterically relatable) portraits inside.

Out Tuesday, Oct. 21 from Artisan Books, the collection features 125 of Friend’s most beloved and brand-new canine characters, captured in her signature oil-painted style that’s equal parts sophisticated and cheeky.

Each page introduces a new furry personality, from Little Louis the espresso-loving chihuahua who ponders “the absurdity of the canine condition,” to Dave, a Boston terrier with a sweet spot for gummy bears. There’s also Pip, a brainy Border Collie who’d rather work a Rubik’s Cube than herd sheep, and Debbie, a Chihuahua sipping a raspberry mojito.

Even Super Dog makes an appearance — cape, mask and all — ready to leap into action the moment a snack bag rustles.

Friend, 52, paints her canine subjects like classic characters, giving them quirks and expressions that feel instantly familiar to anyone who’s ever loved a pet. Her work blends old-world portraiture with modern humor, celebrating the charm and chaos of dog life — and, as she puts it, “the ways our pets reflect us right back.”
