As No Kings demonstrations are held around the nation, hundreds gathered in downtown Gainesville to protest the Trump Administration.
Protestors voiced outrage over President Trump’s policies, including ICE raids, cuts to federal programs, and deployment of federal troops to U.S. cities.
Others voiced concern over Trump’s perceived unlimited power while the government remains shut down.
“I’m out here to protest the fact that we now live in a dictatorship, and I want us to get back to a democracy,” Larry, who joined the protest, said.
When asked his feelings on Republicans calling the protests anti-American, Larry said, “Trump is the anti-American. We’re the Americans.”
Another protestor named Cindy stated she was angry, scared and worried about her children and grandchildren’s future.
“Trump says he’s not a king or a dictator, but I think that’s what he’s trying to be, and he’s pretty much made it,” Cindy said.
Sam and Susan attended their first protest, expressing frustration over the impact of Trump’s policies on farmers, international relations and the overall discord in the country.
“Every day, it’s like you get more amazed at what goes on, what Trump is doing, and without the Congress, without any authority, just doing things, that’s definitely a king or a dictator,” Sam said.
“The Senate has totally given up their powers. You know, the Democrats don’t have enough people to vote, and the Republicans are just following whatever he says,” Susan said.
Sam is a registered republican, but he said he does not see himself voting for a republican for a long time.
