Vicky Krieps is thrilled to see her Phantom Thread costar Daniel Day-Lewis return to the big screen.
When PEOPLE caught up with Krieps, 42, at the New York Film Festival premiere of Father Mother Sister Brother on Friday, Oct. 3, the actress talked about Day-Lewis’ new movie Anemone, which also screened at the festival.
“I haven’t seen the film. It just came out here, right?” Krieps says, when asked how she is feeling about watching Day-Lewis act for the screen for the first time since Phantom Thread.
“I haven’t seen it yet, yes. But I’m looking forward to it, absolutely,” the actress adds. “I didn’t know it was coming out. I came here and then someone told me, ‘Oh, and two days ago Daniel was here,’ and I said, ‘What?’ I knew that he was working on that film, but I have no idea it was here.”

Krieps, a Luxembourgish-German actress, found her breakout role alongside Day-Lewis in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s 2017 movie Phantom Thread, which saw Day-Lewis portray a fictional high-end fashion designer named Reynolds Woodcock in 1950s London. Krieps portrayed a waitress who becomes Reynolds’ creative muse and lover after a chance meeting in a restaurant. The movie follows the drama of their relationship. Following its release, Day-Lewis famously took an eight-year hiatus from acting.
“Me and Daniel would walk around nature and just look at trees and, and talk about poetry,” Krieps recalls of her time on Phantom Thread‘s set. “That was beautiful and fun.”

Both Krieps and Day-Lewis took to the New York Film Festival this October to debut their new movies Father Mother Sister Brother and Anemone, respectively. In Anemone, Day-Lewis stars as a British ex-soldier-turned recluse whose brother (Sean Bean) contacts him for the first time in decades to persuade him to return to the wife and son he abandoned decades prior. Day-Lewis is directed by his son Ronan Day-Lewis, whom he cowrote the movie with.
Krieps’ Father Mother Sister Brother, meanwhile, is an ensemble anthology-style dramedy that examines three groups of siblings and their relationships with their aging or deceased parents. Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Cate Blanchett, Mayim Bialik, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat also star in the movie, which releases Dec. 24.
