A cyclist was seriously injured during a Friday afternoon traffic accident involving an SUV in Clermont.

Hall County Sheriff’s Deputies reportedly responded to the collision between the bicycle and the 2002 Ford Escape at 2 p.m. on U.S. 129/Cleveland Highway at Ga. 284/Clarks Bridge Road/Main Street.

Hall County Fire Rescue also responded and transported the bicyclist, Torre Clingman Smitherman, 72, of Gainesville, to the hospital with serious injuries. The SUV driver, Autumn Sierra Hamilton, 30, of Cleveland, did not suffer injuries.

The sheriff’s office said an initial investigation revealed Smitherman was riding north on Clarks Bridge Road. Hamilton was traveling northbound on Cleveland Highway.

Smitherman reportedly crossed over Cleveland Highway into the path of the SUV, causing the collision.

HCSO said deputies routed traffic through a nearby business lot to avoid closing the road during the investigation.
