There’s been some changes in Charlie Puth‘s life.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the Grammy-nominated artist, 34, spoke about settling down with wife Brooke Sansone and how he lives a more genuine life today than in the past — and that includes avoiding alcohol.

Looking back on his past while Brooke is currently pregnant with the married couple’s first child, Puth recalled a moment when he realized pretending to be someone he’s not wasn’t serving him well any longer.

“I was in New York, I was staying at the Greenwich, and I don’t drink at all,” said the “See You Again” singer. “I think it clouds my judgment.”

Right before the release of Puth’s third album, 2023’s Charlie, however, “I was like, ‘I’m just gonna have a rager,'” he noted in the interview. “And I woke up with the worst hangover I’ve ever felt in my life. It lasted for, I think, two days.”

Puth continued, “And I remember they all wanted to get coffee the next morning, in a scene-y part of town. I saw them all eating, and then I just turned the other way and walked back to the hotel and just stayed there by myself for a couple days.”

“It’s hard to describe,” explained the “Beat Yourself Up” performer. “but after years of surrounding myself with the wrong things and saying the wrong things, it’s profound when it just all comes to a screeching halt one day at 30 years old in New York City.”

Puth is currently gearing up to release his fourth studio album, Whatever’s Clever!, on March 27. The project will feature the singles “Changes” and “Beat Yourself Up.”

“I’d never sat down and said, ‘Let’s make an album and then release it.’ It’s always, ‘The song’s doing well, we need to put it out. And while I’m doing radio promos and whatnot, going on TV, I’m going back to my hotel and making an album,'” he told Rolling Stone.

The star continued, “This album, Whatever’s Clever!, is the first time where I just sat down and I had a lot of time. I just stayed with myself and [producer] BloodPop, and just made a full body of work. So I wasn’t chasing my tail, but it’s been almost a decade of chasing my tail. ”
