Officials for the City of Gainesville this week honored the late Danny Dunagan, Gainesville’s first elected mayor and longtime Gainesville City Council Ward 1 representative, at a lakeside facility he kept near and dear to his heart.

Before the Thursday morning city council work session and meeting at The Boathouse at Lake Lanier,  Gainesville’s City Council and City of Gainesville leadership held a ribbon cutting ceremony to formally dedicate the boathouse’s ballroom as the C. Danny Dunagan, Jr. Ballroom.  Mayor Sam Couvillon during the dedication ceremony said, “When it opened, he (Dunagan) was insistent on giving the remarks about this building and its importance to our community.  I think it’s proven true that this has been an absolute blessing to our community and it’s because of Danny Dunagan’s leadership that it’s been that blessing. But more importantly, this is going to be a blessing for our community for years and decades to come, and it will always be remembered who was responsible.”

Couvillon added, “Danny Dunagan wanted this boathouse more than anybody. Danny was so proud.”

Dunagan’s wife, MaryLee Dunagan, and the couple’s daughters joined Gainesville city leaders for the ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday morning.
