GAINESVILLE, Ga. — A Gainesville man says he got an unexpected gift on his wife’s birthday this year: a $10,000 lottery win.
Preston Fuqua, who has lived in Gainesville since 1999 with his wife and three children, won the prize playing the Georgia Millionaire scratch-off ticket from the Georgia Lottery. He bought the ticket Nov. 14 — his wife’s birthday — at the Chevron on Price Road, a convenience store he visits daily.
Fuqua had taken the day off to do chores around the house and take his wife out to dinner. When he called to tell her about the win, she didn’t believe him.
It wasn’t until he visited the Georgia Lottery office in Duluth to claim the prize and sent her a photo holding the ceremonial check that she was convinced.
“I gave my wife some money for Christmas and then the rest is in a savings account,” Fuqua said. “I’m going to hold on to it. Well, it’s sitting in a savings account now, but I’m sure it’s going to be blown on fishing equipment!”
Georgia Millionaire offers instant cash prizes up to $10,000 and includes a second-chance drawing in which three players will each win $1 million on New Year’s Day.
Players can buy Georgia Millionaire tickets at retailers statewide. Non-winning tickets can be entered at SecondChanceGA.com for a chance at one of the $1 million prizes.
As with all Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from scratch-off sales benefit education programs in Georgia.
