Bass Fishing Hall of Fame Honors Fishing Historian Dan Basore
The Bass Fishing Hall of Fame Board honors Dan Basore, noted fishing historian, with the Hall’s “Meritorious Service Award.” Called by many the “King of Lures” Dan Basore is in a class by himself when it comes to knowledge about the historical timeline of fishing lures and tackle. Starting at the Sutphin family tackle shop in Speedway, Indiana, where his interest in old bass lures began, to being the key source in securing historical lures for displaying at Bass Pro Shops nationwide. Additionally, all the historical lures Bass Fishing Hall of Fame venue within Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife Museum and Aquarium were sourced through Basore, cementing his reputation as a true historian of the sport. Because of this wealth of knowledge and passion, the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors is to honor Basore as the organization’s ninth recipient of its Meritorious Service Award.

“There are special people within the sport of bass fishing who contribute to its success in special ways,” said the Hall’s past Board president John Mazurkiewicz. “Through his efforts, Dan has and continues to make significant contributions to the sport, especially in terms of preserving its history which aligns perfectly with the mission of the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame. On behalf of all our Board members, we look forward to honoring Dan and having the opportunity to do it in his now hometown of Chicago and at a fishing show he’s been involved with deeply.”
Basore’s journey into historical tackle started in his teenage years, though his late grandfather’s tackle box. This led to him making his first display in 1957 of historical lures, fueling his passion and leading to his almost 70-year journey of collecting old lures and tackle. Along this journey, Basore was able to collaborate with many of the leading tackle brands, including Shimano, Bagley, Bill Norman, and more.
Basore will be recognized at a special presentation taking place at the upcoming Chicagoland Fishing Expo on Thursday, Jan. 22. The event is being held at the Schaumburg Convention Center at 4:30 pm CST. So if you are attending the Expo, if you can put some time aside to honor this legend of the sport.
