Banks County is alerting residents of a romance scam after multiple reports.

According to the Banks County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) criminals pretend to be in a relationship online to gain trust and steal money.

Scammers will create fake profiles, claiming to work overseas or be in the military.

BCSO says they will then move quickly to establish an emotional connection, then start asking for money for emergencies or other uses.

They provided a list of “red flags,” including:

  • They avoid meeting in-person or over video chat
  • They say they “love you” after a few days or weeks
  • They ask for money
  • Their stories don’t add up

They remind residents to never send money or personal information to someone you have never met face-to-face, to reverse image search their profile photos, talk to a trusted friend or family member before sending money, and report suspicious profiles to the platform and law enforcement.
