A Baldwin man was arrested on charges including obstruction, following a Tuesday night traffic stop in Clarkesville.
The Clarkesville Police Department said that an officer observed a gray Ford Fusion traveling south on Washington Street without its headlights illuminated at around 8:39 p.m.
The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver then failed to yield immediately and instead turned left onto East Louise Street, continuing into the parking area of the Ingles Market gas pumps in Clarkesville, where the vehicle came to a stop in a parking space.
Upon stopping, the driver, later identified as Steven Mitchell Crocker, 39, of Baldwin, reportedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot across the parking lot.
The officer pursued the suspect on foot, issuing multiple verbal commands for him to stop. Crocker then continued fleeing down the side of East Louise Street, off an embankment, and into a wooded area, where the officer was able to apprehend and take him into custody.
Units from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and the Demorest Police Department responded to the scene to assist.
Due to minor injuries sustained during the apprehension, Crocker was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Habersham for evaluation and was later medically cleared for release. Officer Simmons also suffered a minor knee injury during the pursuit.
A check of the suspect’s driver’s license revealed an active warrant for Probation Violation through the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, as well as a suspended driver’s license for Commercial DUI.
Crocker is currently charged with the following offenses:
- Obstruction of an Officer
- Driving While License Suspended
- Driving Without Headlights at Night
