NEED TO KNOW
- A baker’s refusal to make her sister’s wedding cake for free has caused a family feud
- The bride and her family argue that her older sister should make the cake free of charge because “family helps family” and it could double as her wedding gift
- Redditors agreed with the baker’s decision to reject the request because she should be valued for her time, expertise and labor
A baker is contemplating whether or not she’s in the wrong for denying her sister a free wedding cake.
The 30-year-old professional baker asked users in a post on Reddit’s “Am I the Jerk” forum for their opinion on her decision to reject her 27-year-old sister’s request that she make her wedding cake for free. The pair’s family members have taken the bride’s side, arguing that the baker should “just do it as a gift” and stop being “so business-minded.”
“The cake she wants would take three full days of work and costs over $500 in ingredients alone,” the baker explained. “I told her I can’t just eat that cost. She said I’m greedy and ‘only care about money.’ “

The bride argues that “family helps family,” and claimed that she doesn’t have the means to pay for what her sister would typically charge for a wedding cake. In response, the small bakery owner offered her “a discounted rate” that would be “just enough” to cover the cost of materials and labor for her assistant.
The bride “flipped out” that her sister would only offer her a partial price reduction. Her mother agrees that the cake should be made for free.

Most Redditors sided with the baker in this scenario.
“NTJ (Not The Jerk) and let your mom know she’s welcome to pay for the ingredients and help make it with you so that family is actually helping family,” the top comment reads. “I would also make it a less elaborate and easier to put together cake than what your sister wants. Remind her she can get one from Costco if she wants.”
Other Redditors agreed that the “family helps family” argument the bride made shouldn’t be one-sided. They suggested that other family members of the bride and groom should “chip in for the cost.”

“It seems as though the bride is the one who, ‘only cares about money,’ ” one individual said. “She doesn’t think she should have to pay anything at all. She obviously does not understand the meaning of the word greedy.”
Commenters told the baker to stand firm in her decision because wedding cakes are “are extremely time consuming and expensive,” and she should be valued for her time, expertise and labor.
