Around the SEC Has a New Coach

Happy Early National Signing Day Dawg Nation! This week’s around the SEC is basically dominated by the coaching carousal and signing day shenanigans, which is unfortunate cause we have a massive SEC Championship Game on Saturday against Alabama.

Anyone that says the SEC Championship Game does mean much any longer due to the expanded playoff can go on and get. Winning the SEC is a primary goal each season, and some of us remember the dark days of not even competing for a spot in the game. Or, like yours truly, some of us were at the game and in the end zone that Aaron Murray and co. were driving towards when a batted ball landed in Chris Conley’s hands as time expired.

I still remember Kirby Smart jumping for joy and rushing the field with the rest of the Alabama sideline as the clock struck 00:00 in 2012. In my silent rage, I was so mad at him for celebrating so hard against his alma mater. Alas, I was a naive and heartbroken youth at the time, and his defense just made an SEC and national championship sealing play. Luckily he is on our sidelines now, and I hope we can finally beat Bama in an SEC Championship game.

Back to the newsmakers, here is a list of new SEC head football coaches:

  • Lane Kiffin, LSU (formerly Ole Miss head coach)
  • Alex Golesh, Auburn (formerly USF head coach)
  • Jon Sumrall, Florida (formerly Tulane head coach)
  • Pete Golding, Ole Miss (formerly Ole Miss DC)
  • Ryan Silverfield, Arkansas (formerly Memphis head coach)
  • Will Stein, Kentucky (formerly Oregon OC)

Six new head coaches in one week is wild for the SEC. I think the Golesh hire is unfortunately a good one by Auburn. I believe Stein has some big shoes to fill but will keep Kentucky afloat in the SEC and do an admirable job. I think Silverfield will be gone within three years (and will get blasted by Georgia in Fayetteville next fall after his unprovoked inflammatory remarks towards the Georgia football program earlier this season). Finally, I think Kiffin will have no more success at LSU than he did at Ole Miss, deliver no trophies to the Tigers, and jump ship for a new gig by the end of the decade.

Switching gears, Early National Signing Day is today. While we won’t go in depth in this piece, it’s worth noting that Georgia currently has the #5 class ranking based on the 247 Composite Ranking, which is good for second in the SEC behind Alabama even after the decommitment of #1 recruit Jared Curtis.

In a wild week in the SEC full of shocks and shakeups, I’ll leave you with this: Go Dawgs, Beat Bama.
