Born on May 27, 1997, to parents Becca and Steve Jones, the football star grew up as one of four children. The Jones siblings weren’t allowed to watch a lot of TV or play video games, so the crew naturally leaned into sports.

“Daniel learned a lot of his competitive nature from his brother and with his sisters,” Becca told The Athletic in February 2019. “It was just a healthy sense of competition, and I think they egged each other on.”

In addition to attending each other’s games over the years, Daniel’s siblings have continued to show their support for one another, including when Daniel was drafted to the NFL in April 2019 by the New York Giants. The trio sent Daniel a heartfelt congratulatory video celebrating his achievement.

Here is everything to know about Daniel Jones’ parents, Becca and Steve Jones.

Becca and Steve have four children together: Rebecca, Daniel, Bates and Ruthie.

All four of their children went on to play sports in college. Daniel and Ruthie attended Duke, where the former played football and the latter played soccer. Meanwhile, Becca and Bates went to their mom’s alma mater, Davidson, where they played field hockey and basketball, respectively.

“Growing up with all the sports in the household was a lot of fun,” Daniel told The Fayetteville Observer in August 2017. “It basically meant you always had someone to throw the football with or play one-on-one with.”

“Charlotte is definitely a special place to me,” he told The Charlotte Observer in October 2021. “It’s where I grew up. I really spent my whole life in North Carolina until a few years ago when I moved up here. It was an awesome place to grow up and to play different sports.”

With four children playing sports, the Joneses were constantly on the move. All of the kids would attend each other’s games and make a day out of it.

“It was always fun,” Becca told The Athletic in February 2019. “We never felt like it was something we had to do or that it was a burden. Saturdays were the best because everything was all packed into one day, before school sports started.”

She continued, “Everybody went to each other’s games and cheered and then got back in the car and went to the next thing. It was just something we did. We felt like there was a lot of joy in doing it.”

After she graduated, Becca worked as a translator for the Charlotte Community Health Clinic before serving as a translator and tutor for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools, where she provided services until 2018.

Although Daniel began playing basketball at 5 years old, he chose to focus on football before college. A self-proclaimed “late bloomer,” Daniel — who was 5 feet, 10 inches and 148 lbs. in high school — told his dad he wanted to try to become a college quarterback, but Steve was hesitant.

“I watch what quarterbacks do and the decisions they make. A lot of them could make better decisions, and I think I would,” Steve recalled his son replying, per The Athletic. “I think I could win that way.”

Daniel subsequently shot up in size — growing to be over 6 feet tall and 220 lbs. — and went on to be the quarterback for Duke University before going pro.

When Daniel was drafted to the Giants in 2019, his parents were eager to watch their son play his first NFL game.

“We can’t wait … we cannot wait to see him take the field,” Becca told the New York Post in August 2019. “We know he’s going [to] be prepared, we know he’s going to be ready.”
