Alabama Teen Fatally Mauled by Dogs While Fishing
A 16-year-old Alabama boy died after being attacked by a group of dogs while fishing in a private pond on his family’s property.
Gabriel D. Barron, of Daleville, was killed on Feb. 19. Dale County Coroner John Cawley said Barron was fishing in a pond located on his family’s property when several dogs entered the area and attacked him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cawley described the dogs as pit bull mixes. Reports indicate multiple animals were involved, though authorities have not confirmed the exact number. The dogs were later taken into custody by law enforcement.

Investigators say the dogs were owned by 42-year-old Thomas Sutton, whose property borders the Barron family’s land along Lynwood Road. Sutton was arrested on Feb. 22 on unrelated charges of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. As of Feb. 23, he remained in the Dale County Jail without bond.
Daleville Police and the Dale County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. Authorities have said additional charges related to Barron’s death are possible as the investigation moves forward.
Under Alabama’s dangerous dog statute, commonly known as Emily’s Law, dogs involved in attacks that result in serious injury or death can be seized and evaluated through a court process. If a dog is found to have caused a person’s death, a judge may order the animal to be put down. Authorities have not yet announced what determination will be made in this case.

Barron was a student at Zion Chapel High School and grew up in the Wiregrass area, according to his obituary published by Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home. His family described him as someone who enjoyed being outdoors and staying active.
Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes. His obituary noted that he enjoyed spending quiet afternoons near the water. He also had interests in biking, weightlifting and riding four-wheelers and e-bikes.
A celebration of life service is scheduled for Feb. 26.
Barron is survived by his parents, three sisters, four brothers and his paternal grandmother.
