Data center leeway; Abolish ‘Pet Rent’?; New charges for MARTA murder suspect

*Statesboro city officials are allowing a little leeway for data centers. The council approved a new ordinance last night that will allow for proposals, but several regulations must be met. That includes a special use permit requirement and a sound study.

*A petition called “Abolish Pet Rent” urges the federal government to pass legislation to limit pet security deposits and monthly pet rent. NBC12 reports advocates argue that high pet fees make it challenging to find affordable pet-friendly housing. Renters and animal welfare advocates frequently organize on platforms like the Georgia Pet Coalition Facebook Group, and many say housing issues are one of the biggest reasons people surrender their pets to shelters.

*The Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia said on Tuesday the man accused of fatally stabbing a 66-year-old woman on a MARTA train is now facing a federal charge of committing an act of violence causing death at a mass transportation station. Atlanta News First reports 25-year-old John Matthews allegedly stabbed Margaret Swan 18 to 20 times on a MARTA train near the Oakland City station last Saturday. Swan’s daughter is calling for more police on trains, while MARTA notes it has 280 officers for rider safety. Matthews is also charged with murder.
