Two Gainesville homeless camps were cleared of people living in them this week, and police are defending the action.
A police spokesman tells CBS News Atlanta the occupants had been ordered to leave what is private property near Monroe Drive and Athens Highway by Monday night or face possible arrest. The homeless had been living there with the permission of the owners but were asked to leave because the owners are preparing to sell the land.
“Police have been working with property owners for the past few months regarding illegal trespassing on their property by individuals,” police spokesman Kevin Holbrook said. “During this time many organizations have come together to provide resources and help. Unfortunately, some of those chose not to seek help and break the law.”
Homeless advocates in the city warn, however, the displacement could worsen an already difficult situation for those directly affected, despite the availability of shelters and other resources available to them.
There were about 100 people affected by this week’s action.
