The Stephens County Board of Commissioners will hold a work session on Tuesday, June 2, at 7 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse to discuss creating an ordinance that will govern data centers. Stephens County currently lacks an ordinance for this, and the Board of Commissioners aims to be prepared if a data center chooses to consider Stephens County. This ordinance will be designed to protect current residents and property owners.

No data centers have reached out to Stephens County about constructing a facility. The current goal is to examine regional and state ordinances so that Stephens County can be prepared well in advance. Staff is conducting as much research as possible to continue protecting Stephens County citizens through smart land use. Proper planning involves foresight and preparation.

The Board recently extended a moratorium on the permitting of data centers through October 14, 2026, to give the county time to get this ordinance in place, explains Stephens County Administrator Christian Hamilton.

Hamilton explains why this moratorium is needed.

The Board of Commissioners asks that citizens gather facts and help draft this ordinance. As always, the Board of Commissioners’ goal is to protect those who elected them to serve.
