HIAWASSEE, Ga. — Authorities have identified the woman found dead in Lake Chatuge over the weekend as 59-year-old Shelley Lynn Dietrich of Murphy, North Carolina.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Dietrich was discovered in the water near the end of a dock at Marina Station on Lake Chatuge around 10:50 a.m. Saturday, May 9. Towns County 911 received the initial call from a boater who reported finding a woman in the water.
The Towns County Sheriff’s Office and EMS responded to the scene. The sheriff’s office later requested assistance from the GBI and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as the investigation continued.
Dietrich was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body will be sent to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
Earlier Saturday, the Towns County Sheriff’s Office said multiple agencies were assisting with the active water death investigation near the marina by The Ridges.
The investigation remains active.
