If you want lush canopies, healthy roots, and trees that shrug off summer stress with aristocratic confidence, May is the time to act. In my garden, I always feed flowering and fruiting trees now, as the soil warms and growth picks up, but I avoid fertilizing drought-stressed, newly planted, or late-flushing trees, which can be damaged by a poorly timed nutrient boost.
