CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Early voting is off to a modest start across Georgia ahead of the May 19 primary, with turnout just over 2% after the first week of in-person voting.

As of 5:00 p.m. Friday, 178,596 ballots had been cast statewide since early voting began Monday, April 27. That represents about 2.4% of Georgia’s roughly 7.35 million active voters.

Statewide, the Democratic primary has drawn slightly more participation so far, with 94,600 ballots cast compared to 88,915 in the Republican primary.

In Northeast Georgia, however, turnout has leaned heavily Republican.

Across the counties covered by Now Georgia, 19,265 voters have cast ballots. Of those, 14,365 participated in the Republican primary, while 4,675 voted in the Democratic primary.

Early voting continues

Early voting began April 27 and will continue in the days leading up to Election Day on May 19. In Habersham County and across much of the region, multiple early voting locations are open during the week, with hours varying by site.

For the first time during this early voting period, many locations will also offer Saturday voting on May 9, providing additional opportunities for voters who may not be able to cast ballots during the workweek.

Local election officials typically expect turnout to increase as Election Day approaches, particularly during the final days of early voting and on weekends when access expands.
