Mr. Joel Harrison Bentley, age 85, of Toccoa, passed away Friday, April 24, 2026 at NHC Healthcare of N. Augusta.
Born October 19, 1940, he was the son of the late Jim and Florine Carter Bentley.  Joel was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle.  He loved his Lord, his family, his friends, and his country.  Joel’s family was very patriotic.  He and his brothers served their country with over 120 years of service.
Joel was a graduate of Toccoa High School, class of 1958, Truett McConnell University, Brenau University, and Old Dominion University.  He retired from the United States Navy as Chief Intelligence Specialist.  Joel also retired from the Internal Revenue Service with 25 years of service and was the owner of Bentley Business Services.  He was a member of the 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Masons, Khedive Shrine Temple Shriners, Vietnam Veterans of America, Paralyzed Veterans of America SE Chapter, Disabled American Veterans Post #15, life member of Veterans of Foreign War Post #4346 and the American Legion.  Joel was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Family members include his wife, Frances Phillips Bentley; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Bentley McFarlin and Marty; grandson, Brandon Ken McFarlin and Morgan and Michael Bentley McFarlin and Cheyenne; great-grandchildren, Ethan Zane McFarlin, Emily May McFarlin, Oliver Kenneth “Ollie” McFarlin, and Adeline Ann “Addie” McFarlin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, James Bentley, Don Bentley, Gerald Bentley, Charles Bentley, and Mildred Pace.  He was the last member of his immediate family.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 5pm – 7pm Monday, April 27, 2026.
Funeral services will be held at two o’clock Tuesday, April 28, 2026 from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with Dr. Jamie Smith officiating.  Military Honors will be provided by the United States Navy.  The family will have a private burial at Stephens Memorial Gardens.
