Google today announced plans to develop a new data center in LaGrange, anchored by a foundational commitment to partnering with communities to build infrastructure the right way. Alongside the new facility, Google is making long-term investments in local energy affordability and environmental stewardship to create lasting benefits for LaGrange residents and the state of Georgia.
“Google’s investment in LaGrange is a testament to our community’s leadership and commitment to the AI economy,” said T. Scott Malone, President of the Development Authority of LaGrange. “Building the infrastructure necessary to thrive in the AI economy will be critical to our future success, and we are thrilled to have a partner like Google to help lead the way.”
“Our newest investment in LaGrange represents another chapter in our deep partnership with Georgia—a state that continues to lead with innovation and vision,” said Jen Ryan, Regional Head of Data Center Public Affairs, Google. “We are excited to become a part of the LaGrange community. More than just building a data center, our goal is to be a good neighbor, and that starts on day one by investing in local priorities, creating opportunities, and working with residents to build a strong future together.”
Partnering with the Community, Powering the Future
Google is committed to growing its infrastructure responsibly. The new Troup County facility will be one of the most energy-efficient in the industry, joining Google’s global network of data centers that power services like Google Maps, Search, YouTube and other digital tools for people and businesses in Georgia and around the world.
“We are excited to welcome Google to LaGrange and look forward to their partnership with our community,” said Patrick Bowie, LaGrange City Manager. “Google’s decision to locate here fills a vital void in our utility system left by the closing of our largest electric customer. We are working with their team to invest in infrastructure improvements that will benefit all utility customers while exerting downward pressure on rates.”
When Google builds data centers, the company covers 100% of the cost of power for the site and any infrastructure needs driven by its operations. Google will not pass the costs of its infrastructure growth onto local families.
Investing in Local Energy Affordability
As part of its commitment to LaGrange, Google is providing $1 million to support Groundswell’s SOUL® (Save On Utilities Long-term) program. This funding will deliver critical home safety and efficiency upgrades for local seniors and families, helping to lower energy costs and improve resilience.
“Google’s $1 million contribution will support critical home repairs and energy efficiency upgrades for at least 50 LaGrange families, providing long-term energy bill relief and preserving home ownership,” said Michelle Moore, Groundswell CEO. “We appreciate Google’s commitment to being a good neighbor, and we’re honored to work alongside them to build a more affordable energy future for LaGrange.”
Our Dedication to Sustainable Water Management
Google is guided by a commitment to replenish more freshwater than it consumes. In Georgia, this includes a partnership with the Trust for Public Land to restore the habitat along the Chattahoochee River by removing invasive, water-thirsty plants. This project will protect local ecosystems while improving water quality and availability.
For its operations, Google invests in key infrastructure and systems that strengthen watershed resilience. In Douglas County, Ga., Google implemented a pioneering system to cool its data center using recycled municipal wastewater, reducing the use of potable water and protecting the Chattahoochee River.
Google’s Long-Term Commitment to Georgia
Google has been a neighbor in Georgia for nearly 20 years and promises to continue to show up today and tomorrow for every community it calls home. Since entering the market, Google has invested a total of $1.2 billion in its Georgia data centers, cementing a long-term commitment to the state’s digital infrastructure. These operations serve as a massive economic catalyst, contributing $1.5 billion annually to Georgia’s GDP. The presence of Google’s data centers helps fuel the local economy by generating $941 million in labor income every year.
