ELBERTON, Ga. — Authorities have identified human remains discovered in Elbert County in early 2025 as a man who had been missing for several months.

Elbert County Coroner Chuck Almond said the remains, found Jan. 26, 2025, have been positively identified as 76-year-old Fred Louis Dubose of Elberton. Dubose had been reported missing after walking away from his home on Huntington Drive on Sept. 9, 2024.

According to the coroner’s office, a homeowner reported possible human remains on their property to Elbert County E911 on Jan. 26. The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the coroner’s office responded and took control of the investigation.

Between September 2024 and January 2025, multiple search efforts were conducted involving local and state agencies, including the sheriff’s office, Elbert County Emergency Services, Georgia State Patrol aviation units and K-9 teams, along with Dubose’s family, private citizens and other volunteers.

Almond credited the work of investigators and forensic partners for the identification.

“This identification is the result of tireless work by our investigators and forensic partners,” Almond said. “We are grateful to bring closure to the family of Fred Dubose and thank everyone who assisted in this incident.”

The coroner’s office also thanked the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for its assistance in identifying the remains.

Authorities extended condolences to Dubose’s family and friends.
