BANKS COUNTY, Ga. — A stretch of Interstate 85 northbound is shut down following an officer-involved shooting, according to authorities.

The closure impacts all northbound lanes between Exit 149 (GA-15/US 441) and Exit 154 (Martin Bridge Road). Law enforcement has secured the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested and is en route to take over the investigation, said Banks County Sheriff Carlton Speed.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area and expect significant delays.

Alternate routes

Motorists traveling northbound can use the following detours to reconnect with I-85 at the Martin Bridge Road (Highway 63) on-ramp:

  • Highway 59
  • Highway 64 to Highway 59
  • Highway 51 to Highway 63

Authorities have not released details about what led to the shooting or whether anyone was injured.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
