HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. — The driver rescued after her SUV plunged down a ravine off Ga. 197 North last week failed to maintain her lane before leaving the roadway, according to a Georgia State Patrol crash report obtained by Now Georgia.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 3:59 p.m. March 20 on Ga. 197 North near mile marker 14.

Troopers say a 2018 Ford Explorer driven by 65-year-old Kathleen Lovell of Cleveland was traveling north when it veered off the right side of the road. The SUV struck multiple small trees before coming to rest about 65 feet down an embankment after hitting a large tree with its front.

Lovell was the only occupant in the vehicle. She was injured and transported by Habersham EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment.

The crash occurred in clear weather and daylight conditions on a dry roadway, troopers noted.

Authorities cited Lovell for multiple traffic violations related to lane usage and roadway position, according to the report.

As previously reported, emergency crews worked to rescue the driver after the vehicle went down the steep ravine. The crash remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
