South Hall residents learned Tuesday that their part of the county is, after all, apparently going to be home to one of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) ICE newest detention facilities.

Oakwood City Manager B.R. White said Tuesday the federal government has purchased the McEver Road site mentioned in earlier discussions. It is between Oakwood and Flowery Branch. White notes that he, nor any other city official, has been contacted by DHS about its plans.

But he said from what he has been able to learn, the Oakwood facility will be more of a processing center for detainees destined for a larger facility in Social Circle.

Meanwhile, 9th Dist. Congressman Andrew Clyde (R-Jackson County) says he confirmed DHS’ intentions with the agency.
