Snowfall blankets Northeast Georgia

People in North Georgia awoke to a winter wonderland Saturday. Snow blanketed the ground in some areas, and began falling steadily after sunrise. By 8 a.m., roads and sidewalks were starting to get slick.

There was nearly an inch of snow on the ground in Clayton by 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 31.

“Snow should continue off and on throughout the day, ending around suppertime at 5 or 6 p.m.,” said NowGeorgia.com weathercaster Tyler Penland.

Georgia Department of Transportation road crews were out early, scraping snow that was quick to accumulate. GDOT spent the day Friday brining major roadways, which did help with travel early on. However, local officials warn that as accumulations mount, travel will become increasingly hazardous.

As with Winter Storm Fern, they are again urging drivers to stay off the roads for their own safety and that of road crews and first responders.
