A new commentary says the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans give undue prominence to meat, dairy, and “bad” fat, and risk the public’s health. The Viewpoint article, titled “When Nutrition Science is Ignored/Potential Public Health Cost of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines,” expresses concern that the new guidelines ignored the advice of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which emphasized limiting meat, added sugars, and high-sodium foods in favor of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and plant proteins; instead releasing guidelines not based on scientific evidence.
