Dark Energy, which is known for building power solutions that can take real abuse in the field, used this year’s show to introduce a new portable electric generator called the Recon designed for both outdoor recreation and emergency home use.
The new generator is sized to handle real-world demands rather than just topping off a phone or headlamp. According to representatives on the floor, it is capable of powering a small camper or pop-up trailer, while also being able to keep a refrigerator running during a home power outage. That dual-use capability makes it appealing to overlanders, campers, and anyone looking for a quieter, cleaner backup power option at home.
Because the unit is fully electric, it operates without the noise, fumes, or fuel storage concerns associated with traditional gas generators. This allows it to be used safely outdoors around camp setups and, importantly, indoors during an outage when ventilation can be an issue. Dark Energy has also created a solar panel that is much larger than their current offerings for the Recon, allowing users to replenish power off-grid. One limitation worth noting is that, at this time, the generator is not designed for direct vehicle-mounted or in-vehicle charging applications.
For those familiar with Dark Energy, this generator feels like a natural evolution rather than a surprise. The company has built its reputation around rugged portable power banks and durable solar panels aimed at military, outdoor, and adventure users. Their existing products are designed to withstand harsh environments while still delivering dependable power, and that same design philosophy carries over into this larger system. Instead of reinventing their brand identity, Dark Energy appears to be scaling it up.
On the show floor, the generator drew interest from attendees looking for a single solution that could cross over from weekend trips to emergency preparedness. It sits in a growing category of electric generators, but Dark Energy’s background in portable solar and field-ready power lends credibility to their entry into the space.
