Nick Reiner: What to Know About Rob Reiner’s Troubled Son Who’s Accused of Killing His Parents

Nick Reiner is the middle child of the late Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

After getting married in 1989, the couple welcomed two sons, Jake and Nick, and a daughter, Romy. Nick began struggling with drug addiction when he was a teen and was in and out of rehab until he was 19 years old.

In 2016, Nick co-wrote a movie, which Rob directed, loosely based on that difficult period in their lives. Being Charlie not only explored the complicated dynamics between a famous father and his son struggling with addiction, but also the reservations Nick had about rehabilitation facilities.

“The program works for some people but it can’t work for everybody,” Rob told the Los Angeles Times in September 2015. “When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son.”

“We were so influenced by these people,” Michele added. “They would tell us he’s a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them.”

Rob and Michele were tragically found dead by apparent homicide inside their Brentwood, Calif., home on Dec. 14. Nick was arrested the day after his parents’ deaths, and has been “booked for murder,” according to Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell.

Nick was born in 1993 

Rob and Michele’s second child was born on Sept. 14, 1993, in Los Angeles.

Nick told PEOPLE in 2016 that he went to rehab 17 times and experienced homelessness multiple times after refusing to return. “I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas,” he said. “I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.”

He has three siblings

Rob and Michele welcomed three children during their marriage. Jake has worked as a producer and production executive and has had minor roles in shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Monster: The Ed Gein Story. Outside of the occasional public event with their father, he and Romy have largely stayed out of the public eye.

The Oscar-nominated director also shared a daughter, Tracy Reiner, with actress and filmmaker Penny Marshall. After they got married in 1971, Rob adopted Penny’s daughter from her previous marriage. The couple divorced in 1981.

Nick admitted that he didn’t “bond a lot” with his dad growing up

In a May 2016 interview promoting Being Charlie, Nick told the BUILD Series that he “didn’t bond a lot” with his father as a kid.

“He really liked baseball. I like basketball,” Nick said, noting that finding a common interest in making movies made him “feel closer” to his dad. ”

He wrote a screenplay about his struggle with drug addiction

In 2016, Nick co-wrote Being Charlie, a film about an 18-year-old struggling with drug addiction who butts heads with his famous father. He penned the script with Matt Elisofon, whom he met in rehab, per The New Yorker. Nick Robinson starred in the film as Charlie, and Cary Elwes played his father.

“Working on this with Nick was like being in therapy with him,” Rob, who directed the movie, told The New Yorker. He added during their BUILD series interview that Nick was “the heart and soul” of the movie and that he often deferred to him “for giving it honesty and the truth.”

Though Nick claimed that Being Charlie was not a biography of his life, he told PEOPLE that he had “a lot of stories” to draw on for the film.

As for working with Rob, Nick told The New Yorker that “seeing him in his element, doing what he loves most” helped him learn more about his dad and how he loved him.

Nick was arrested on a murder charge in connection with his parents’ death

Around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 14, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call to provide medical aid at Rob and Michele’s home. But when they arrived, they found a man and a woman — later confirmed to be the couple — dead at the scene.

Their daughter, Romy, reportedly found her parents.

After being questioned by the Los Angeles Police Department, Nick was arrested following his parents’ death on Dec. 15 and is being held on $4 million bail.
