When it comes to baby names, Colleen Slagen and Jessie Paquette aren’t afraid to be honest about the names they just don’t like.
Slagen and Paquette, two friends who are both baby naming consultants, recently started a podcast together called Name 911. For this week’s episode, the women spoke candidly about names they do not like, aptly titling the clip, “Names We Hate.”
There are a couple of different categories that the two women don’t approve of. Slagen says she’s particularly not a fan when parents choose last names as first names. She explains that it’s a fine line, noting they can often end up “country bumpkin” or “preppy lacrosse player.” However, she says how the name fits really depends on the person.

“It totally depends on the user. It depends on where you’re from. It depends on who you’ve met with that name,” explains Slagen.
On the other hand, Paquette says it’s really not that important if someone doesn’t like your baby name. She explains that it’s a very personal thing, and not everyone is going to understand your choice.
“Someone not liking your baby name is like someone just having a different interior decorating style than you,” she says in the episode. “You might not like farmhouse, but it doesn’t really have anything to do with you because you don’t have to live there.”
Although the two don’t share the same feelings on every name, there are ten monikers they mention during the podcast that they both dislike.
For boys, Slagen and Paquette mention August, Beau, Porter, Keegan, Griffin and Maverick. For girls, they add Olivia, Sophia, Eliana and Lydia.

Paquette says she doesn’t like most of the top names for girls, including Olivia and Sophia, because she hears them too often. She says Eliana was on her list because it was “trying too hard.” She didn’t like August and Beau.
Slagen says she doesn’t like the name Lydia because it reminds her too much of a “Crazy Aunt Lydia, and I just can’t get past that.” She doesn’t like Porter because she can hear the “Porter Potty” insult already, and she also doesn’t like Keegan or Griffin.
However, while the two mostly agree on those names, they tend to disagree about others, which was their point at the beginning of the episode.
“There are names that I borderline almost named my child that actually give Colleen a visceral reaction and vice versa,” Paquette says.
Slagen agrees, adding, “You might not like all the names I chose for my kids, and that’s okay.”
