One driver was arrested, and another was injured after an overnight wreck on Friday, Dec. 5, on I-985 south of Exit 16 near Oakwood.
The Georgia State Patrol said the driver of a Ford Expedition was driving too fast for conditions and ran off the left side of the roadway.
That vehicle hit a cable barrier and rotated counterclockwise, back into the travel lanes. The Expedition came to a stop in the left southbound lane, and the driver got out and ran to the right shoulder.
That’s when a Kia Sportage, driving in the left southbound lane, struck the front of the Expedition.
The Expedition was pushed off the roadway, and the Sportage came to rest in the left southbound lane.
That caused the left front tire of the Expedition to come off and go into the right southbound travel lane.
A Chevrolet Express van traveling in the right southbound lane tried to avoid the second accident when it struck the tire from the Expedition. The collisions caused all to be disabled.
The driver of the Expedition was arrested for DUI, too fast for conditions and failure to maintain lane.
The driver of the Kia Sportage sustained minor injuries and was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
Both lanes of I-985 Southbound were shut down for over an hour due to the accidents.
