Gainesville has been moved back to Region 7-6A.

The GHSA sided with the other Region 8-6A members that appealed Gainesville’s placement in Region 8 on Wednesday during the organization’s executive committee meeting in Thomaston, Ga.

Region 8 is home to most of the Class 6A Northeast Georgia schools from Habersham County and the Athens Area, as well as Gwinnett and Walton counties.  It’s a region Big Red has been a part of for almost all of its existence, except for the last two years.

“We got moved to Region 7,” Lindsey said. “Region 8 appealed and got us bumped.”

Gainesville has played in Region 7-5A for the last two seasons and was initially placed in Region 7-6A when the first round of region alignments came out last month.

Gainesville athletics director Adam Lindsey appealed the placement to the GHSA reclassification committee to move back to Region 8. That was approved in November.

Meanwhile, Region 8-6A had no problems with Mountain View staying in the region, another school that appealed and won to move out of Region 7-6A last month.

Gainesville rejoins current Region 7-5A members Johns Creek, Lanier, Milton, and Roswell, as well as newcomers Alpharetta and Riverwood, in the new Region 7-6A for the next two seasons.

Meanwhile, Region 8-6A will house Apalachee, Cedar Shoals, Clarke Central, Habersham Central, Jackson County, Loganville, Mountain View and Walnut Grove.

Walnut Grove and Cedar Shoals chose to play up from Class 5A to Class 6A. Clarke Central moved up to Class 6A based on enrollment numbers.
