The Lake Lanier Association has completed the latest phase of its shoreline protection project.

Project Armor is a part of a decade-long initiative to reinforce areas on the lake where sediment has fallen into the water. This phase secured 5,280 feet across 16 vulnerable areas on Lake Lanier that have been impacted by severe erosion.

The project prevents more of the shoreline from falling into the lake, which prevents nearby areas from becoming too shallow for boaters.

The LLA explained that as sediment falls into the lake, islands are lost. As more islands dwindle, the lake’s storage capacity for drinking water also decreases. The organization estimates over 5 million people rely on Lake Lanier for drinking water.

Additionally, the LLA highlighted that some islands on lake lanier have already disappeared due to erosion in the area.

The Association worked in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Sidney Lanier, Marine Specialties, Martin Marietta, Simpson Trucking And Grading, Inc., Gwinnett County Government Water Resources, Forsyth County Georgia Government and Hall County Government to complete the project.
