A Gainesville man is facing charges of neglect of an elderly person after his 71-year-old family member was found with serious injuries.

Gainesville Police Lieutenant Kevin Holbrook said the investigation into Ajani Omari Lee, age 35, started in October when staff at Northeast Georgia Medical Center notified police of the victim’s injuries.

“This individual had multiple open wounds to his legs and hips, had laceration marks and ligature marks around the neck area,” Holbrook said. “Through the investigation, it was determined that Lee, who was the primary caretaker for this individual, had deprived this individual of the necessary sustenance and healthcare for their well-being.”

Holbrook said the victim, who is wheelchair-bound, remained at Northeast Georgia Medical Center at last report.

Lee was arrested by Gainesville Police on one felony charge of neglect of an elderly person. As of Tuesday, December 2, he remained in the Hall County Jail without bond.

Holbrook added that the investigation is still ongoing, and more charges against Lee are possible.

“This is a very serious case. Someone who has those open wounds, those third-degree burns across their body, it’s just something unfathomable that you could imagine someone putting someone else through,” Holbrook said.”
