The National Turkey Federation said 2025’s Thanksgiving meal may cost less than it has in years past.
Senior Director of Public Affairs for the organization, Alex Davidson told AccessWDUN that turkey prices are down 16% from 2024, with an average 16-pound turkey costing $21.50 this year. Davidson explained that The American Farm Bureau released its yearly assessment of the average cost for the holiday meal, which also predicted dips in prices.
“Dinner for 10 people is actually down 5% from last year,” Davidson said. “There was a lot of hysteria. A lot of people (were) concerned…we’re really happy to say that, some prices may be up for some components of it, but the turkey is down and the overall cost of the meal is down.”
Davidson said since 2020, inflation regarding Thanksgiving- related foods has been more rampant, however, the organization finds that prices are now trending downward.
He explained that reports of food prices rising often refers to the wholesale price, rather than the price that consumers are paying. However, because the turkey industry prepares for the holiday all year, it enables retailers to offer deals that bring prices lower than expected.
“They’re working year round, putting [turkey] into cold storage, making sure that all of the retailers have the full supply that they need so they can offer special deals, special discounts,” Davidson explained. “We view turkey as a loss-leader. It’s something that gets people in the store. As they’re purchasing turkey, they often buy a lot of other things. And so retailers, you’ll see, Aldi is doing great deals. Walmart is doing great deals. Really, everywhere you look, they have some sort of ‘meal deal.’”
