A brush fire that ignited Sunday afternoon sent a massive plume of smoke into the sky, visible for miles across the region.

According to Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols, crews responded to a 2-acre brush fire on Sandy Drive near Hollingsworth. The fire also involved roughly 100 old tires burning on the property. The thick, dark smoke could be seen from several towns — including Nicholson, where residents reported the column rising high above the treeline.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze by early evening. No injuries were reported.

Officials have not released details on what sparked the fire. Now Habersham will update this story as more details become available.
