Gainesville athletics director Adam Lindsey confirmed Saturday afternoon that the Georgia High School Association has put its ruling on last night’s on-field altercation versus Brunswick on hold until Monday.
Gainesville was leading Brunswick, 42-0, with less than two minutes to go in the third quarter when the altercation happened. Several players from both sides left the sidelines and entered the field of play.
Gainesville is set to take on 2024 Class 5A runner-up Langston-Hughes in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A football playoffs next Friday in Fairburn, Ga.
GHSA executive director Tim Scott told the AJC earlier today that the organization is currently investigating the situation.
“Any time we have an unsportsmanlike situation as we did last night, we hate that,” Scott said. “I know the schools hated that, both their administration and coaches. We take that seriously, it’s under investigation, we’re looking at it, and we’ll hopefully have a decision no later than Monday morning.”
Meanwhile, Lindsey said they should receive the ruling on Monday.
“While we are waiting to get an official ruling from the GHSA on Monday, we will continue to prepare for our third round matchup with Langston-Hughes next Friday night,” he said.
According to the GHSA’s sportsmanship bylaws, each school could face fines and player suspensions. The GHSA is currently reviewing all film from the game and will make a ruling on Monday.
