The second round of the Georgia High School Association football playoffs ended with five area teams moving on to the quarterfinals.
But the story of the night included Jackson County and Gainesville.
In Class 5A, Jackson County held off the defending Class 5A champions Milton, 24-19, to advance to the program’s first quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, in Brunswick, officials called the game after an on-field altercation happened with 1:57 left in the third quarter. Gainesville won the game, 42-0, but now awaits word from the GHSA on how many players might be suspended due to the altercation. Both sidelines cleared.
In Class 3A, Jefferson rolled past Harlem, 42-14, and into the Elite 8, while North Hall imploded with 2:03 left in the game as LaGrange ran away with it, 52-28, at The Brickyard.
In Class 2A, Rabun County left no doubt with a 35-0 win over Berrien to advance.
And in Class 6A, Buford sprinted past Newton for a 31-14 win.
In the GAPPS state championship game, Lanier Christian knocked off Creekside Christian, 24-8, to win its second straight championship.
