The Duluth Police Department arrested a driver that allegedly fled the scene of a single-vehicle crash and left his passenger with life threatening injuries.
Officers discovered a silver sedan pinned between a traffic signal pole and a utility pole at the intersection of Buford Highway and Duluth Highway on Nov. 16 just before 5:30 a.m. Officers found the unrestrained front-seat passenger had been ejected from the vehicle and was critically injured. The passenger was transported to a local hospital and remains in critical condition, DPD said in a release.
Surveillance footage captured the driver exiting the heavily damaged vehicle and fleeing on foot, abandoning the passenger and failing to call 911.
On Nov. 18, an investigation identified Samuel Contreras-Garcia, 20, as the driver. Contreras-Garcia was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on the following charges:
- Hit and Run Resulting in Serious Injury or Death (Felony)
- Serious Injury by Vehicle (Felony)
- Reckless Driving
- Failure to Maintain Lane
- Driving Without License
