The former Braselton Police Chief arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) on Wednesday for harassment and stalking had a temporary protective order (TPO) filed against him in August, court records show.

A Jackson County woman claimed 49-year-old Michael Steffman used Flock cameras to track her location and called her from various phone numbers.

She said he “followed me to a neighborhood and watched me go to a house. Sent me a map. Tracked me going to Gas South Arena.”

The Jackson County Superior Court Judge, Ben Green, denied the petition on Aug. 22.

“While past conduct is concerning, there is credible evidence that the petitioner could present on this day to support current allegations of stalking. She was advised to file a report with the Jackson Co. Sheriff regarding the past conduct,” Green wrote in his denial.

Steffman was sworn in as chief earlier this year and had been with the department for 20 years.

Days before his retirement and resignation, the Town of Braselton took to Facebook to “proudly” honor Steffman’s 20 years of service.

Hours before the GBI’s announcement of Steffman’s arrest, the town announced that Manager Jennifer Scott appointed Zack Tiller as interim chief.

Steffman bonded out on a total of $13,000 on Wednesday.
