The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced that the State Transportation Board approved the second round of National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program awards on Thursday.

GDOT says the action advances efforts to build a reliable fast-charging network to support the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across the state.

More than $24.4-million is being awarded to fund 26 locations through public-private partnerships.

“Our robust infrastructure network has set Georgia apart in attracting business, promoting travel, and providing reliable transportation for all Georgians,” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said. “This investment will help further secure our status as a national leader in innovation and infrastructure for years to come. We appreciate Georgia DOT for fulfilling the state’s commitment to a robust, reliable fast-charging network that meets federal standards and serves communities across Georgia.”

The NEVI program is a part of the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which allocated $5-billion nationwide for states. Georgia was allotted roughly $135-million of those funds. Those funds will cover roughly 80% of project costs.

“Georgia continues to lead the way in electric mobility by investing in infrastructure that strengthens our transportation network, promotes economic development and improves the experience for EV drivers statewide,” GDOT commissioner Russell McMurry said. “Georgia DOT is proud to do our part to implement this federal investment responsibly, closing gaps in the statewide network and ensuring that fast, reliable charging is available where Georgians need it most.”

Hall County was among the 26 locations listed, which should be built out over the next five years. It has a project identification number of 0020370. Cobb County-based Silver Comet Energy, Inc. was the awardee to build it.

The project is in its very preliminary stages, and no specified location is listed on GDOT’s website. It just shows some location between Oakwood and Rabbittown off of Interstate 985.

Other area counties receiving funding to build a charging station includes Athens-Clarke County (PI No. 0020327), which will also be built by Silver Comet Energy; Union and Towns Counties (PI No. 0020329), which will be built by Universal EV LLC; Habersham County (PI No. 0020335), which will be built by PowerUp America LLC; Gilmer County (PI No. 0020337), which will also be built by PowerUp America; and Franklin and Hart Counties (PI No. 0020343), which will be built by EnviroSpark Energy Solutions, LLC.
