The woman who was hit and killed by a train Tuesday morning in Gainesville has now been identified.

Gainesville Police officials on Thursday morning identified the victim as Stephanie Leigh Cleveland, age 43, of Gainesville.

Cleveland was hit by an Amtrak commuter train at around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the rail crossing on Athens Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision remains under investigation. Kevin Holbrook with the Gainesville Police Department said it’s unclear why the woman was on the tracks.

“The train conductors advised that they observed the individual, attempted to alert them, but weren’t able to stop and struck the individual,” Holbrook said. “This was an active commuter train, it did have a number of passengers on it. They did work with us through the investigation.”
