HABERSHAM COUNTY, GA—With the holiday shopping season already underway, bringing crowded stores, busy parking lots, and the rush for sales, Habersham County Sheriff Robin Krockum and his staff are reminding the public to prioritize safety and vigilance to ensure the joy of the season is not marred by crime or accidents.
Vigilance in parking lots and vehicles
Sheriff Krockum emphasizes that shoppers must remain aware of their surroundings, particularly when driving and parking.
- Visibility first: Start your day with a clean windshield to clearly see other drivers and pedestrians who may walk out from behind parked cars.
- Fuel up: Check your vehicle’s gas gauge before starting a day of shopping and dining to avoid stopping for gas after dark.
- Secure valuables: Leave valuables secured at home whenever possible. Any items left in the vehicle should be stowed out of sight or covered at all times.
- Lock up: Keep your vehicles locked at all times, whether in your driveway or in a busy parking lot.
- Slow down: In crowded parking lots, slow down, pack your patience, and watch for other drivers who may not see you.
- Park smart: Park in well-lit areas and, if possible, areas with a clear line of sight from the building.
Shopping and personal safety tips
In crowded stores, personal security is paramount to prevent theft.
- Protect possessions: Keep purses, wallets, and cell phones secured and in your possession at all times. Never leave items unattended in a shopping cart, even for a moment.
- Limit cash: Do not carry large amounts of cash, as this can make you a target for theft or robbery.
- Minimize distractions: Turn off earbuds and put down the phone. Pay attention rather than being distracted by conversation or music while walking to or from the store.
- Buddy system: Shop with a friend or in groups whenever possible, designating one person to watch for suspicious activity.
- Reporting concerns: If someone appears to be following you, report it to a store employee and ask them to stay with you until someone can walk you to your vehicle.
Safety for children and self-care
The Sheriff’s Office also stressed the importance of child safety and driver awareness.
- Never leave children alone: Never leave a child or children alone in a vehicle, even for a moment.
- Child separation plan: When entering a store, designate a place where your child should wait for you if they become separated. Ensure the child understands they should never leave the store with anyone except you.
- Drive responsibly: Do not drive distracted or impaired. Tragedies only take a few seconds and can alter lives forever.
- Rest and enjoy: In addition to all the safety precautions, Sheriff Krockum reminds the community to take care of yourselves and make sure you’re getting adequate rest, and to enjoy time with family and friends this Christmas season.
