Cloudflare outage causes widespread internet disruptions

A major outage at Cloudflare — the Internet infrastructure company used by roughly 20% of the world’s websites — caused widespread service disruptions Tuesday, impacting platforms from ChatGPT and “League of Legends” to transit systems and news sites, including NowHabersham.com.

Cloudflare reported the issue around mid-morning and said engineers had deployed a fix by 10:40 a.m. EST, though some lingering problems were still being monitored.

The outage affected a wide range of services, including X, Shopify, Dropbox, Coinbase, Moody’s, and multiple transportation agencies. New Jersey Transit reported slow or unavailable digital services, while New York City officials said some city systems were experiencing disruptions. France’s national railway, SNCF, also warned customers that parts of its website were down.

Cloudflare works as a content delivery network, routing traffic through thousands of servers worldwide. The system protects sites from overload and speeds up performance, but when Cloudflare goes down, massive parts of the internet go with it.

The incident follows other recent tech outages, including Microsoft’s Azure disruption last month and an Amazon Web Services outage in October.
